Amazon as part of the Flora of Peru project that the Missouri Botanical Garden had revived with Alwin Gentry as the leader of the project . For 20 months in 19 78 and 1979 , James had the opportunity to be in Peruvian Amazon working for Gentry with Camilo Diaz and other wonderful Peruvian colleagues all based in Iquitos. There he learned Spanish with a Peruvian jungle accent .
He also became aware of the emerging science and practice of agroforestry studies based on millennial practices in many continents of hundreds of Indigenous peoples . He decided that he was more interested in economic botany and perhaps sustainable farming and agroforestry then plant taxonomy and fortuitously was offered a job back in the same applied Research Institute in Israel's Negev desert. His job, from 1979 to 1986 required him to visit most of the hot deserts and semi deserts of the world looking for wild plants to drought and or salinity with known or potential economic value. Those he brought back he grew in an experimental nursery and plots and he managed a seed bank as well. as "Plant introduction officer" - a job title that is now considered not only passe but unacceptable in view of the massive Global plight of invasive plants and invasive animals in almost every ecosystem type around the world. To his defence, he did not smuggle plants or seeds but always cooperated with the phytosanitary authorities in donor countries, and in Israel, and frequently had to leave seeds to be germinated in Quarantine before they were released. After 4 years full time work, he was granted permission By his boss to begin a PH D in plant ecology at the Hebrew University in Israel. There he about the kind of questions that ecologists ask and he continued to be interested in sustainability. Ultimately about the same time he finished his

PHD he learned of a new field of action and discipline of research that would become known as Restoration
Ecology. This he realized was the field he had always been looking for. He moved to Montpellier France to take a job at the CNRS even though most of his published work until that time had been in applied research.
